About 6 months ago I read an article in which a young girl had donated her hair to be made into free wigs for cancer patients. Reading the article has made me decide to do the same and I hope others reading this will donate their hair too. Almost everyday we are asked to donate money to a huge variety of fantastic and worth while charities but even in these modern times there are still things more valuable than money. By donating hair, not money, to make free wigs for cancer patients I am giving somebody, somewhere their identity back….
It was a Friday afternoon and the sun was shining as I made my way to the salon (Fanny & Clara’s in Hathersage kindly cut my hair for free as it was for such a good cause). It wasn’t until this point that I began to get nervous. I’d been telling everybody for days “it’s only hair it’ll grow back” but as I walked into the salon it dawned on me that it’s not just hair… It’s part of who I am and essentially part of my identity.
“Just cut it off quickly before I change my mind” I said to the stylist. So she did. I one chop it was gone, all 11 inches of it! The kind lady styled my hair and made it look lovely, but when I looked in the mirror it just wasn’t me looking back.
I can’t even begin to imagine what it must feel like to loose your hair entirely, I feel lost with out mine and I’ve still got loads of it left.
I’m slowly but surely getting used to my new hair, and it will grow back! The process I’ve been through has taught me, just a tiny tiny bit of how it must feel to totally loose your hair, and identity, through cancer treatment. Even though I’m sad my hair has gone, I am so happy that somebody will soon be getting a bit of their identity back to help them on the road of recovery from cancer.
To anybody reading this with 8inches of hair or more, please, please consider donating it to this worthy cause! I’ve included some links below for those of you who are interested :+)
